What is…?

A plain-language dictionary of the words GRRRLHOOD uses, and what each one means.

// Chapters
What is a life chapter?

A life chapter is the transition you're living through right now. GRRRLHOOD is built around six of them:

  • Moving Abroad — starting over in a new country.
  • Career Pivot — changing what you do, or walking away from it.
  • Healing — recovering from a loss, a breakup, burnout, or a hard season.
  • Motherhood — the whole arc from trying, to pregnancy, to raising kids.
  • My Changing Mindset — rebuilding how you see yourself and what you'll accept.
  • Building My Own Chapter — creating something of your own: a business, a project, a new life.

You can be in more than one at once. Your chapters drive who you're matched with and what shows up in your feed.

What does it mean to "complete" a chapter?

GRRRLHOOD doesn't mark a chapter "done" — it tracks where you are inside it, in three stages:

  • Just starting — at the very beginning of this chapter.
  • In the thick of it — right in the middle.
  • Through it — you've come out the other side.

Reaching "through it" is what completing a chapter means. You set your stage with a quick check-in and can update it whenever things shift. It's also used to pay experience forward: a woman who's through a chapter is shown posts from women just starting the same one.

// The feed
What is the feed?

The feed is your home screen — a stream of posts from other women in the community. It's personalised to your chapters: posts that fit where you are in life surface earlier and more often.

How is my feed built?

Every top-level post carries one or more chapter hashtags (like #healing or #moving_abroad), seeded from the author's chapters and what the post is about. Your feed then ranks posts by a blend of three things:

  • How fresh the post is,
  • How well it fits your chapters — both the post's content and the author's own chapters, and
  • A pay-it-forward boost that lifts posts from women just starting a chapter you've already been through.

Change your chapters and the feed changes with you on the next load. You also steer it directly: "Not for me" on any post hides it and quietly shows you less content like it (see below).

What are reactions?

Reactions are the ways to respond to a post — love, support, celebrate, strength, and relate. They're all positive; there is no downvote or dislike anywhere in GRRRLHOOD.

What is "Not for me"?

"Not for me" is a private signal, not a downvote. Tap it on a post and two things happen: that post disappears from your feed, and the feed shows you less content like it. It works on the post's content, not the whole chapter — marking one motherhood post "not for me" won't wipe motherhood from your feed, it only tunes what shows up within it. The author is never told.

What is karma?

Karma is a count of the reactions your posts have received over time. It's private to you — only you can see your own karma. It's never shown on your posts or profile to anyone else, so there's no public score to compare between members.

// Communities
What is a community?

A community (we also call them circles) is a shared group space built around a chapter, an interest, or a city. Like everything in the app, communities are screenshot-protected: what's said inside can't be grabbed and pasted elsewhere.

How are communities created and joined?

There are two kinds. Open communities are discoverable from the Circles tab — you browse them and join the ones that fit. Private communities don't appear in any list: you join one only with its invite code.

Inside a community, whoever runs it can manage members, set the group's name, photo and description, and choose whether a new member sees the history from before she arrived.

// Matching
How does matching work?

Once a week, GRRRLHOOD brings you up to five women walking a chapter like yours — no swiping, no endless scroll. A match only becomes real when both women accept, so no one lands in your inbox uninvited, and you can unmatch at any time.

What is the compatibility / "what you share" rate?

Instead of a bare percentage, a potential match shows you what you actually share, ranked by how much it matters:

  • The same life chapter first — the strongest signal,
  • then the specific situation within it (the sub-chapter you both picked),
  • your city and country, and
  • if you're both moving abroad, the new language you'll be learning.

The more of these line up, the higher the compatibility. You see it as a tier that names what connects you, rather than a raw number.
